Coaching Co-ordinator's Reports by Carole Bacon
The junior squads have been progressing well since January, despite some unwelcome weather. The children enjoy their lessons with Adrian, Carl and Roberto and are making steady progress. The final squad session for this term will be the week beginning Monday 27th March.
The Ladies’ Thursday night coaching has been also been hit by the weather this term but it has still proved a popular addition to the schedule. If any ladies would like to have squad coaching after Easter on a Thursday, please speak to Adrian or Tracy who will try to organise something for you.
The Rusty Rackets course has seen a few new members join. If you are a new member who hasn’t played for a while, this is the ideal course for you. Carl runs this on a Monday from 1.30 – 2.30.
Wednesday Mixed Morning has seen a committed group of players improve their tennis skills and tactics over time. This 2 hour session runs from 10am – 12pm every Wednesday at a cost of just £6.50. It is great for your fitness as well as your tennis; just turn up and play.
We all appreciate that most adults would prefer coaching at the weekends or in the evenings. MTA are actively recruiting a coach, who meets their high standards, in order to be able to give more opportunity for adult coaching at Bearsted. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact Tracy or Adrian to discuss your coaching needs.
Coaching Report – AGM, Nov 2016
Since May this year we have been in a period of transition with our junior coaching. Karen decided to stop coaching and concentrate on her Sports Massage business and Neil retired. Determined to make sure that all the juniors would still have coaching, Lee Grant and myself, with backing from the Tennis Committee, set about finding a suitable coach or coaches to work at Bearsted.
After meeting a couple of organisations it was decided that Maidstone Tennis Academy would be able to offer us what we needed in terms of junior and adult coaching.
There was a successful launch day in May and some half term camps for the children. After this, MTA started to run junior squads on every night of the week which contained most of the juniors previously coached by Neil as well as a few new children. The summer camps were extremely successful with 25 – 35 children coming each day. The vast majority of children signed up again for the autumn season and to date MTA have 42 juniors having coaching in squads. Hopefully the weather will be kind and allow squads to take place over the winter.
In addition to the junior coaching, MTA have started to provide coaching for adult members. Those members keen to organise their own squads have done so and Celia Pascoe (ladies’ Captain) has been instrumental in organising coaching at Ladies’ practice. This means that, including those adults being coached by Phil, we have approximately 40 adults in the club receiving coaching.
MTA are keen to support the club in different ways and have organised a Christmas social event for the mixed morning group and the ladies. We are also working with them to promote a junior Christmas party. Paul Hayes is organising a singles ladder this winter and MTA have offered a free coaching session as the prize. We see this level of commitment from MTA as very positive and know that they are as keen as we are to make the partnership successful for everyone.
Lee and myself hold regular meetings with MTA to address any issues that may arise and discuss how things can move forward. We report back to the Tennis Committee who will offer advice and guidance. If anyone has any suggestions for coaching or issues they would like to raise, we are more than happy to speak to MTA on your behalf.

Over the summer it was great to see so many children up at the club taking part in the Junior Summer Camps. The coaches and their helpers organised the days brilliantly and all involved had a fantastic time. Look out for news of October half term camps and a mini red/orange ball tournament in the Juniors section.
The junior coaching programme is in full swing with squads for all ages and abilities. These take place every day from 4.30 so if your child is not in a squad but would like to have a go, please contact Tracy at MTA.
The Wednesday Morning mixed morning is proving popular. This session runs from 10am – 12pm and cost just £6.50 for the 2 hours. The session is a combination of drills to improve your shot selection and control, as well as practising new skills. Anyone can simply turn up and play. It is great for your fitness too as I found out over the summer!
Carl is also running some ‘Rusty Rackets’ sessions on a Monday from 1.30pm – 2.30pm. These are sessions for people who might have played in the past but wish to return to tennis. They are great for improving your basic skills and building your confidence so that you can come to Social Tennis.
MTA are also offering a new assessment session every Saturday from 10.30 – 11.30 for adults and juniors. If you are a new member returning to tennis or have never played before, ring Tracy and she will organise an assessment for you with one of the coaches. The coaches will then be able to advise which squad or club sessions would be best for you to attend.
If you are interested in any of the above or have a group of people you would like to do a squad with, please contact Tracy at MTA on 07909 705499 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org
For further information about squads and coaching, please visit the MTA Bearsted website.
Ladies’ Practice Night is going to take a different format this year. As well as match play, Roberto will be coaching the ladies in the tactics of doubles play and improving their shot selection. Many thanks to Celia Pascoe, our Ladies’ Captain, for organising all of this.
Finally, it is with huge thanks that we say an official goodbye to Neil Buscombe in his capacity as a club coach. Over the years, many young players (and some older ones!) have been coached by Neil. He has a boundless enthusiasm and passion for helping others to learn and improve. You will still see him around the club however, as he will be helping Lee Grant organise some events for juniors. You may also see him taking life at a slower pace at the Bowls Club next door!
What a fantastic introduction to the coaches from Maidstone Tennis Academy (MTA) at the Family Fun Day on Bank Holiday Monday. It was great to see so many members, new and established, of all ages enjoying the activities. I would like to thank all of the MTA team who gave up their time to run this day for us as well as everyone who helped on the day. When everyone at the club plays their part in an event like this, it shows just what an amazing club this is to belong to.
The partnership with MTA is an exciting opportunity for Bearsted to grow the coaching programme and provide coaching for people of all ages and standards of play. Working with MTA, as well as continued support from Neil and Phil, we are hoping to build the coaching programme throughout the next year.
At the Fun Day, MTA were taking requests from people regarding squad coaching as well as having some sessions outlined in advance of the day.
These are examples of the types of tennis that MTA are offering:
- Pre-school age mini tennis
- Mini Tennis for primary school age children
- Improver junior/teen squads
- Beginner Adults
- Cardio Tennis (fitness and tennis combined)
- Adult squads (daytime, evening and weekends)
- Mixed morning - an hour of drills followed by an hour of organised match play. Wednesday Mornings from 10-12, £6.50. Just turn up and play.
